Personal trainer or not?

Many people take out a gym membership but pass up the option to hire a personal trainer, thinking it unnecessary. However, if you are serious about attaining your fitness goals in the quickest possible time and in the most efficient manner, hiring a personal trainer may be worth the added expense. Though a personal trainer can't replace a physiotherapist it is the next best thing while you are training.

Benefits of having a personal trainer

  • Getting you acquainted with the gym and the equipment. If you have only driven past a gym or have exercised in one before, there may still be some areas of the gym and some equipment with which you are unfamiliar.
  • Teaching you the various exercise routines. The job of a personal trainer is to teach you how to warm up, exercise and cool down properly.
  • Helping you perform the movements safely and effectively. Exercise, especially weight training, can be hazardous if you don't know what you are doing. A personal trainer will ensure that you do not hurt yourself during your workout.
  • Tailoring workouts that suit your fitness level and goals. What the person next to you is doing may be right for him/her but may not be right for you. Your personal trainer will keep track of your progress and grade your routine accordingly.
  • A certified personal trainer will communicate with your doctor or physiotherapist and ensure you do not do anything against his advice.
  • If you are the sort of person who is likely to slack off unless you are accountable to someone, then a personal trainer is what you need.

Who needs a personal trainer?

  • If you are obese and have difficulty losing weight and/or keeping it off.
  • You exercise faithfully but don't seem able to lose the flab in certain areas - hips, arms, thighs. Personal trainers specialise in body sculpting workouts.
  • You have a health condition that may make exercising hazardous - arthritis, osteoporosis, heart disease, diabetes.
  • You are unsure of what equipment to use and how to use it.
  • You are embarrassed by exercising in public. Having a personal trainer with you can give you the confidence you need.
  • You have specific fitness goals - running a marathon, becoming a bodybuilder, entering a competition.

With so much emphasis on health, fitness and appearance nowadays, hiring a personal trainer is no longer the domain of the rich and famous. Ordinary men and women desiring to get the most out of the time they spend in the gym are hiring personal trainers and achieving good results. The money you spend on one can offset hospital bills later on. Of course, you should always consult your doctor and/or physiotherapist before embarking on any exercise program.
